Social Media Top Tips for Florists

With billions of users worldwide, social media marketing has become the new norm.

Not only does social media provide an instant connection to potential audiences across the globe, but also it’s the fastest way for your product to be seen by hundreds, thousands, and potentially millions of people.

Think about road-trips. Out on the open road, we pass hundreds of billboards with catchy phrases, pretty pictures, and enticing offers.

It would take a decent chunk of time for a billboard to be seen by thousands of people. Now, with the click of a button, that same catchy phrase, picture, or offer can be seen by thousands in an instant.

How can you best market your floral business on social media? We’ve got you covered.

We're talking easy ways to make your business bloom on social, how to post with confidence, and top social media platforms in the floral industry.

Let's start with a few basics:

1. What’s in a name?

It’s crucial that your social media handles are consistent and recognizable across all social platforms.

If your shop name is something common like, “The Flower Shop” then it’s likely that @theflowershop is already taken, so you might have to get a little creative—but not too creative.

You want your customers (and potential customers) to be able to find you easily on every social channel.

One idea is to add the name of the city you’re in after your shop name to create a unique handle (@theflowershopfishkill, for example).

2. Post with Purpose

What does that even mean?

A simple Google search will tell you that you need to post on social media several times a week. And every “expert” will tell you something different when it comes to how many times you should be posting per week.

The point is, to be posting!

Post consistently, whether it’s once a week or once a day, and with purpose. A well thought-out, pleasing post is better than a random one posted just for the sake of posting.

3. Post Consistently

When it comes to posting on social media, it’s also important to note that you need to post consistently in order to give your audience a reason to follow you, and to combat social media algorithms.

We suggest starting with three times per week, at a time of day that your followers are most active.

4. Tools are Your Best Friend

There are numerous free tools out there to help you best run your social media accounts.

Use them!

A few that we recommend are, Buffer, Later, and Co-Schedule

These various tools allow you to schedule your posts so you don’t have to be sitting on your phone at a specific time to post manually.

They also assist you with finding the best times to post, best hashtags to use, and even show you analytics of how your posts performed. You’ll be on your way to becoming a social media guru before you know it.

How to Post with Confidence:

1. Identify Your Audience

In order to build your community on social media, it’s important to be very clear when it comes to who exactly you’re speaking to.

When we try to talk to everyone at once, we actually end up talking to no one.

When you post, you should post as if you’re talking to one specific person or audience that you’re trying to attract.

2. Video Ideas

Have you heard the saying “everything is content?”

Well, it is

  • Opening up the shop for the day? Make a quick video.
  • Making an arrangement? Make a quick video.
  • Preparing to head out for a delivery or event? You got it. Make a quick video.

Video is prime content real estate and should make up the majority of your social media content.

The people have spoken, and the people love video.

3. Hashtags

Rumor has it, hashtags may become a thing of the past sometime soon.

But for now, here’s what you need to know: Using larger hashtags is where the money is. Over the last few years, using small, medium, and large hashtags were what helped the algorithm. Now, it’s best to stick to larger, relevant hashtags that generally have under 5 million posts. Learn how to find hashtags on Instagram here

A new feature will be coming soon, that will allow users to select up to 3 topics that encompass what your post is about. This is how hashtags will eventually be replaced.

But until then, take advantage of them in every post. Just make sure you’re not using a banned hashtag (i.e. #ValentinesDay…we were shocked too).

Top Social Media Platforms for Florists:

Instagram and TikTok are the best platforms for the floral industry.

We’re going to focus solely on Instagram because let’s face it, managing one social platform is time consuming enough, let alone creating content for two.

The good news is that Instagram now has many of the features TikTok enthusiasts have grown to love.

Instagram’s Top 3 Features:

  1. Reels: Consider this your TikTok doppleganger. It’s no secret, our attention spans have shortened year after year. Short-form content, specifically video, is where it’s at. Instagram has made creating this short-form content super easy by allowing you to use other creator’s Reels as templates, easily save audio for later use, and quickly edit right within the app.
  2. Stories: Instagram stories are great for BTS (behind-the-scenes, not the K-pop group) content. The best part is this content can be far from perfect…in fact, it’s encouraged! People want an honest, real sneak peak. Pro Tip: Utilize what are called “story stickers,” so features like polls and quizzes, to keep your audience engaged.
  3.  Instagram Live: Going live on any platform is a great way to grow your audience and allow people to get to know you better. If you go live with other users, it will help to expand your audience even more (think interviews and customer testimonials).

Bonus tip: The “collaborator” feature on Instagram is golden! This feature allows you to tag/collaborate with another Instagram user. Once the person you tag has accepted your collaboration, it will show up on both feeds. This is great because it means it puts your page in front of their audience and vice versa.
